If you're a first-year student at SRM IST, the terms GPA and CGPA might seem interchangeable, but they represent two distinct metrics of your academic performance. Let's break them down mathematically and practically.

What is GPA (Grade Point Average)?

Your GPA is a measure of your performance in a single, specific semester. It only takes into account the subjects and credits you took during that exact 4-6 month period.

If you take 6 subjects in Semester 1, your GPA is calculated purely based on those 6 subjects. At the start of Semester 2, your GPA effectively "resets" for that new semester's subjects.

What is CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)?

Your CGPA is the weighted average of all your GPAs combined since your very first semester. It represents your overall academic performance across your entire degree program up to the present moment.

Because CGPA is cumulative, it gets harder to change as you progress through your degree. A bad GPA in your 1st semester will drastically pull down your CGPA. However, scoring a 9.0 GPA in your 7th semester will barely move your CGPA if you have 6 previous semesters anchoring it down.

The SRM Calculation Formula

The core mathematical formula used by SRM IST is the same for both, but applied differently:

  • GPA = (Total Grade Points in Current Semester) / (Total Credits in Current Semester)
  • CGPA = (Total Grade Points of ALL Semesters) / (Total Credits of ALL Semesters)
