One of the most frequently asked questions by students at SRM Institute of Science and Technology is: "What CGPA is required to get placed?" The answer depends entirely on the type of company you are aiming for.

1. Super Dream Companies (CTC: 10 LPA to 40+ LPA)

These are top-tier tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and top product-based startups. While some of these companies don't strictly filter by CGPA, the majority at SRM will set a cutoff around 8.5 to 9.0 CGPA.

  • Safe Zone: 9.0+ CGPA
  • Minimum to sit for most: 8.5 CGPA
  • Focus: Competitive programming, System Design, and core CS fundamentals.

2. Dream Companies (CTC: 5 LPA to 10 LPA)

These include established mid-tier product companies and major consulting firms. The cutoff for this tier is significantly more relaxed.

  • Safe Zone: 8.0+ CGPA
  • Minimum to sit for most: 7.5 CGPA
  • Focus: DSA, Aptitude, and good project work.

3. Mass Recruiters (CTC: 3.5 LPA to 5 LPA)

Companies like TCS, Cognizant, Infosys, and Wipro hire in large volumes. Their primary filtering criteria are usually strict: absolutely no standing arrears and a baseline CGPA.

  • Safe Zone: 7.0+ CGPA
  • Minimum to sit for most: 6.0 or 6.5 CGPA (no active arrears)

The Golden Rule

A CGPA of 8.5 is the universal "safe zone" at SRM. It makes you eligible for approximately 95% of the companies visiting the campus. Anything above 9.0 is excellent, but an 8.5 with great coding skills will always beat a 9.5 with zero practical skills.
